Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve

Meaning “the place where the sky was born” in Mayan, the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve contains nine separate eco-systems in an area of 1.3 million acres. The reserve contains varied vegetation and topography including vast jungle forest, savannahs, fresh and saltwater lagoons and a coral reef 100 yards offshore.
Established as a World Heritage Site in 1987 by the United Nations, this diverse habitat is home to over 300 species of bird such as the toucan, ara, and pink flamingo. Animals in the reserve include pumas, jaguars, howler monkeys, ocelots and foxes. The lagoons are home to crocodiles, turtles, and giant land crabs.
Sian Ka’an may be discovered by driving along one of just a handful of roads that lead into the reserve. As the area has few trails, it is advisable not to venture into the jungle without a knowledgeable guide. Professional guided hikes are available, as well as by kayak to see the area via lagoons.
Within Sian Ka’an are the picturesque villages of Boca Paila and Punta Allen located on a peninsula. These quiet coastal communities are primarily fishing villages, and in addition to sportsfishers, attract divers and visitors that enjoy nature and solitude.
