Puerto Aventuras and Area

Not long ago, Puerto Aventuras was a deserted bay frequented only by fishermen. However, since the first condominum development was established in 1987, the area has grown steadily, and now has a year-round residential community. The town today has private villas, condos, and hotels that surround an attractive 300-boat marina complex.
Around the marina, there are various small shops and restaurants. Charters boats for diving, snorkeling, and fishing are available for hire. The marina also has a dolphin training center that enables visitors to get in the water with these highly intelligent mammals.
Puerto Aventuras also features an 18-hole golf course, and a nautical museum that displays artifacts from the Spanish galleon "El Matancero" which ran aground on the reef off Akumal. The exhibits include cannons, pistols, and coins. The museum also has a collection of handicrafts from area Mayan ruins. |
